Azerbaijani folk songs reflect the temperament of the composers. Folk songs are diverse (ceremonial, everyday, lyrical, historical, related to work, humorous, etc.). One of the Azerbaijani folk song genres of lyric character is bayati.

In the 20th century, genres such as folk romance and romantic ghazals appeared in Azerbaijan folk songs on the basis of eastern poetry styles. The largest number of romantic ghazals was written to the poems of medieval Azerbaijani poets as Nizami, Fuzuli and Nasimi.
